The oldest automobile factory still in operation was founded in 1896 by entrepreneur Armand Peugeot, in Sochaux, France.

Its first vehicles were equipped with steam and gas engines. It was only after its purchase by Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft that the second generation of cars were equipped with internal combustion engines.

As early as 1900, 500 cars were manufactured. However, mass production was halted in 1917, when Peugeot was forced to produce weapons for the army. 1929 was the year the Model 201 was introduced, an automobile that was built 140,000 times until 1936.

After the resumption of business following World War II, more precisely in 1948, the model 203 was presented. Its success was replicated in 1955 with the 403 model, designed by the Italian firm Pininfarina. In 1960 it was the turn of the Peugeot 404, which gained great popularity not only in Europe, but also in the French colonies in Africa. In 1974 the Peugeot automaker managed to acquire the majority share of competitor Citroen.

The resulting merger of the two companies created the PSA Group, into which Simca, Sunbeam and Talbot were also included. Following various commercial difficulties in 1986 it was decided to abandon the Talbot brand altogether.

The range starts with the micro 108 model, followed by the Peugeot 208 and compact class models 301 and 308.

With the 408 and 508 models the middle class is covered, while leading the way in the respective market segments are its off-roaders, vans, and trucks.
